What Psychologists Tell Us About The Quarter-Life Crisis

The following essay was written by our fantastic Intern: Mara Sousa. She wrote it as part of her psychology degree. She suggests that one of the key themes with those experiencing the quarter-life crisis is people who have an external locus of control. This means that you believe that the events in your life are somewhat out of control and down to luck or misfortune. The remedy for this is to take responsibility for your life and ownership over your actions and decisions. To deeply realise that you have more control than you think, and to exercise that control meaningfully.

A brief introduction to coaching

Coaching is a non-judgemental, open, collaborative and confidential conversation between coach and coachee – focusing on the coachee’s own thoughts, challenges, outcomes and goals. It is helpful to understand coaching by knowing what it is not. Unlike therapy, which is about helping people understand their past, coaching is generally forward looking and helps people to […]

4 Unmistakable Symptoms Of The Quarter-Life Crisis

The quarter-life crisis is not something to roll your eyes at. A Linkedin study a few years ago showed that 75% of young adults (19-33) in the UK have experienced one. However there are many of us who don’t actually know that we are having one. That is because the symptoms of a quarter-life crisis are […]

How To Stop Comparing Your Career To Others

There are many reasons why more and more young adults are experiencing the quarter-life crisis, however there is one thing that seems to bring on the crisis more than anything else: career comparison. Teddy Roosevelt said that ‘comparison is the thief of joy’ and the more I coach young adults about their careers, the more […]

My Clearest Possible Definition of Coaching

Unfortunately, there is no ‘one size fits all’ definition for coaching. I think this is the case because everyone is different and therefore everyone has their own unique style and definitions for what they do.  This is great because it means that there is a huge amount of variety and people can find exactly the […]

How Looking For The ‘Right’ Job Can Stop You Finding It

One common theme I have noticed from coaching young adults experiencing the quarter-life crisis is that our generation seems to put an enormous pressure on making the ‘right’ decision.  I resonate with this desire entirely. I remember leaving university and wanting to learn about every single industry and job type before making a decision. How […]

An Unlikely Observation About Resilient People

20-somethings are often labelled a non-resilient ‘snowflake’ generation, and a quarter-life crisis is often met with an eye-roll and some mumbling around how we just need to ‘get on with it’. Recently I have found that most of my coaching conversations have led back to the topic of resilience, and I have noticed a more […]

(3 Minute Read) Imagine the following unlikely situation, that for some reason an over-zealous recruiter told you that your life depended on securing a highly competitive, high paying job in the next 3 weeks. For the sake of the example, imagine that there was absolutely no way you could get out of the contract and that the […]

How To Choose Between A Career You Love And One That Pays

Lately I have become interested in something called ‘background dissatisfaction’. I heard these words from Eckhart Tolle’s book: The Power of Now. He describes how so many of us have an underlying anxiety about life that we are so accustomed to, we barely even notice it. It’s a bit like having muscle that has been […]
